Since 1935, JFCS has been providing a rich heritage and commitment to Maricopa County. This organization was founded during a time when the country was recovering from the devastation of the first World War and the Great Depression. Entire families from the east were packing all they owned and migrating to the warm spacious landscape of Arizona, seeking opportunity and a healthier climate. The community is growing, but few resources exist to assist the infirm, unemployed or widowed trying to raise children.
Three visionary women, members of the Welfare Committee of the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, saw an urgent need and founded Jewish Social Service (JSS), known today as Jewish Family & Children’s Service. Initial services included financial assistance, referrals to nursing homes, and in-home care.
Through the second World War, Jewish Social Service expanded, appointed its first president, and was named a “Red Feather” agency by the now United Way.
In the post-war 1950s, JSS established itself as a non-profit corporation. In 1962, JSS changed its name to Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS) and expanded to a non-sectarian agency serving all members of the community. By 1969, JFCS was helping over 600 area families per year.
In 1970s, multiple services were added, including aid to the elderly and American Indian populations. Home-based services, Helping Hands, Creating Peaceful Families and Shelter Without Walls programs are added in the 80s and 90s.
In the new century, Jewish Family and Children’s Service continued to expand and seek new opportunities to serve the community. We invite you to become a part of this rich legacy by giving or volunteering.
