Prevention & Education
Creating Peaceful Families
The JFCS program, Creating Peaceful Families, is an innovative prevention/early
intervention school and community-based program. In collaboration with
several schools and organizations around Maricopa County, Creating Peaceful
Families utilizes nationally recognized curricula such as that created
by Student Assistance Training International, Character Counts!, Project
Alert and Second Step to improve coping skills, strengthen support systems
and community connections, and improve the community's ability to
identify and address critical issues. Areas addressed include bullying,
substance abuse prevention, anger management and conflict resolution,
character education, and other topics upon request.
Services are provided to students, parents, and personnel in local schools/community
programs and include:
Psycho-Educational Support Groups:
45 minute, eight-week groups comprised of 6-8 at-risk students per group
that follow an age-appropriate curriculum. These support groups are often
the key difference in helping children to realize academic success, have
positive peer relationships, improve coping and resiliency skills, and
increase self-esteem.
Classroom Presentations:
45 minute, in-class presentations to students in schools and community
programs that focus on bullying, character, peer-relationships, and other
topics as requested.
Staff Development Training and Parent Workshops:
These are topic-specific parent education workshops and school staff in-service
training that educates parents/guardians and school personnel so that
they may more effectively identify and address critical issues affecting
children. Training teachers and parents how to utilize effective, positive
parenting skills, and identify and respond to challenging issues reinforces
a child's chance of success, and reduces risk factors.
Family Support Services:
Through the facilitation of presentations, groups, and workshops, students
and families in need of additional services are identified, and are provided
with needs assessments and linkages to community resources. This intervention
is often a troubled family's first connection to community services
and prevents the escalation of family crises.
We believe in the success and safety of our children!
